JAPAN ATTACKS THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS DECEMBER 8, 1941
Japanese bombers and fighter planes
attack Baguio, Iba air field, and Clark
air field at approximately 12:30 PM
shortly after the attack at Pearl
Harbor. 53 P-40s, 3 P-35s, 17 B-17s,
and 30 miscellaneous aircraft were
destroyed and eighty killed and 150
wounded at Clark Field.
The damage to all facilities on the Island of Luzon was overwhelming. There
were few planes left to defend the Islands. The Asiatic fleet had gone south
and left the Philippine waters for Borneo. By December 24th, the remaining
B-17s were flown to Australia to protect them from Japanese bombers. By
the end of December 12th American Army and Naval power in the Philippines
had been virtually destroyed. The withdrawl to Bataan had begun.
